What is The Greenway?
The Inner West Greenway is a dedicated shared Cycleway and Pedestrian Path (walkers, joggers, roller bladers, scooters, prams etc), that connects to the Bay Run in the North, and the Cooks River Run in the South, running along the 6km length of the Light Rail tracks.
What is "The Detour"
At the crucial & crippling halfway mark 3km's in to the 6km Greenway, is an on-road & on-driveway Detour for 1/2 km that was approved by NSW State Govt, seemingly in order to cut corners regarding cost and engineering works, to have the project that had already taken a long time to progress, rushed though to completion. This was despite five viable alternatives available to safely enclose the Greenway, available to view on NSW Govt Dept of Planning website.
It seems cost, and speed of implementation were put above Quality of User Experience, Integrity of the $57Mil Project's Planning Process, and Basic Health & Safety oversights – ruining what should be, can be, and will be a fantastic project.
Lets all work towards the vision of a Seamless, Safer 6km Greenway to give this $57Mil world class project the polish it deserves by revisiting the engineering plans to fix the Detour!
Already the Greenway is "Going Gangbusters" but users of the 6km track are thrown onto the Detour 3km's in !!!
What is the SOLUTION to the Detour?
The diagrams below show the three different viable designs to safely enclose the dedicated Greenway within the Light Rail corridor along the 1/2km Detour, as put forward by Engineers... to keep the Greenway in the Light Rail corridor at The Greenway's busiest halfway mark.
These plans are currently secured on NSW Govt Dept of Planning website-
